Today we would love to introduce Karina Cabrera from BoConcept Auckland. This friendly, funny and always calm Chilean ex-pat has been with BoConcept for nearly 10 years working in both the Chile and Auckland showrooms. Design has been on her radar since childhood, guiding her to a career working on interiors. Now she brings her love of colour and Danish design to clients all around Auckland. Learn more about how she came to New
Zealand, what BoConcept piece is her favourite and why staying current with design is not just a passion, but a necessity.

What brought you to BoConcept?

I came to BoConcept after completing my Bachelors in Interior Design from Mendoza University in Argentina. After three years of working at the BoConcept showroom in Chile, I was chosen as one of the 30 best Design Consultants in the world to attend Champ Camp at the BoConcept headquarters in Denmark. I sparked an immediate friendship with one of the Auckland Showroom attendees. We stayed in touch and when I travelled to New Zealand shortly after, we met up in-person. Fate really fell upon me when the Auckland store manager offered me a position in the New Zealand team. Now, I’ve built a life here for myself with an incredible family and an awesome career!

How do you develop creatively?

There is a lot of information out there and I feel it’s important to be aware of what others are doing and what’s happening within the industry. I follow several bloggers and interior designers on Instagram along with reading both architecture and design magazines to help me monitor trends. There is so much inspiration right at my doorstep as well, I’m surrounded by incredible nature, interesting people and stunning architecture.  It’s important to approach each project with a knowledge base along with some creative inspiration, that will always help you do your best possible work.

HOW DO you balance your own sense of style with your CLIENTS?

My own personal style is forever changing, and I have a major love of colour. I can also appreciate other styles such as an all-white room with texture and organic elements. Design for clients comes through by listening and interacting on a personal level. This way, I can get the best idea of what the client both wants and needs. The most important factor is to reflect the client's own style and personality when selecting furniture. We can find a balance between finding their unique voice and providing ultimate functionality.

What’s your favourite BoConcept piece?

My favourite BoConcept piece is the Carlton sofa. It mixes current style with mid-century lines in a choice of over 120 fabrics making this sofa unique to every home. My entire house is full of Boconcept pieces and really I love them all!

Can you share a memorable project?

I have had the joy of working on so many interesting projects, but this one was really fun to execute. The Parnell house was a newly built home for a family who relocated from Canada to Auckland and needed everything for their new home. I visited the house, met with the family to find out more about their needs and measured the entire space. Then I used BoConcept’s RoomPlanner software to sketch a 3D rendering of a complete furnishing layout in their home. This really helped the client visualize how they would live in this space. The two living rooms have large windows and it was important in this project to create a balance between the inside with the magnificent views of both the greenery and swimming pool outside. It’s styled in neutral colours, but with a pop of colour to inject the client’s personality into the space.
