Anna Brandt

Like refreshing a room for the new season, big effects can come from a small start. Meet Anna, a lover of aesthetics whose chance conversation propelled a transition from orchestrating memorable hotel stays to capturing memories as a full-time photographer.

Tell us about your life in Finland.

I am a 31-year-old property and family portrait photographer, living in Porvoo, a city about 50km east of Helsinki. When I’m not behind a camera, I am usually taking my two hockey-playing sons to a game and being a wife to my handsome and equally hockey-crazed husband.

What did you do before photography?

I worked in customer service at a conference hotel for about 10 years. I loved my job. The work was diverse, and I had lovely co-workers. But I always had the feeling that there was something else out there for me. It turned out that that something was photography.

How did you discover your talent?

I’ve always been interested in interior design and photography. And when we built our house in 2016, I had the opportunity to combine the two: designing our dream interior and capturing it for my Instagram. I have taken a few photography workshops and courses over the years, but it was at this time when I really started taking it seriously. Of course, photography and interiors are very natural partners. They both require a good eye, something I believe I’ve always been lucky enough to have.

Describe landing your first paid gig.

A friend of a friend told me about a local property developer who needed someone to style and photograph his new project. I was excited. Something told me that this opportunity was mine. We met, and he hired me. And this was when excitement turned to nerves. It was my first assignment and I knew that I was, at least in part, holding the client’s success in my hands. But when the project was complete, and I received lots of positive feedback, it felt amazing! I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.

Tell us about your portrait photography.

I am privileged to photograph children and families in my studio and on location. I shoot mainly with natural light and I keep editing to a minimum. My goal is to make my images and the subjects appear as natural as possible.

Your self-build home is stunning. Tell us about it.

It’s been our dream for many years. We started planning in the spring of 2015, building began in October and we got the keys in March 2016. We wanted the feeling of space, for creativity and mental peace. So, we chose high ceiling spaces in the living areas, a calming Scandi white palette throughout and large windows. I love Danish furniture; their clean lines are perfect for the mood I was trying to create. Finally, I’ve played with pops of pastel velvet on accessories to soften the look.

What are your goals for the not-too-distant future?

To continue developing my craft and to be even more confident in my abilities. But most of all, to spend more time with my family. That is key.
