Christmas around the world: Aarhus

As the world’s most global furniture retailer, we enjoy the holidays in sixty-five countries, spanning six continents. Read on to find out how Gitte Johansen, BoConcept’s Visual Manager, celebrates the Season for Sharing in Aarhus, Denmark.

“We love festive holidays In Denmark, but Christmas has to be the most treasured time of our year. By then, we’re deep into the cold and dark days of winter; making us turn up our hygge meters to the max. Think candles, wood burners, great coffee, thick blankets and a sprinkling of Christmas lights. We celebrate on 24th and open our presents in the evening – but not before we’ve danced around the tree. Yes, tradition is big here.”

“We may have some of the world’s most award-winning restaurants, but every home at Christmas is filled with the familiar smells of hearty traditional classics like roast pork, Gløgg and my grandmother’s (now famous) æbleskiver. I’m a foodie who spent close to a decade in Hong Kong, so I mix things up a bit. I’m also a surfer girl, born and raised at the coast. So, my Christmas isn’t complete without the taste of chilled sea air.”

Things to do in Aarhus

Christmas parade
Aarhus is Denmark’s second largest city and 2017 European Capital of Culture. And its annual parade is when Christmas really comes to town. Wave Santa along his route from the harbour to the city centre’s 850-metre pedestrianised high street, Strøget. Watch Santa switch on the street’s iconic lights. Then shop for gifts in department stores, high-street brands and bespoke boutiques.

Tivoli Friheden
Visit Aarhus’ amusement park, Tivoli Friheden, for its famous Christmas market and enchanting light display. The attraction has entertainment for the whole family, with restaurants, playgrounds and 40 rides, including four roller coasters and Denmark’s highest free fall tower, the 65-metre, Hjertekig.

Den Gamle By
Den Gamle By (The Old Town) is a historic-themed attraction come museum, taking you on a journey through Denmark of old – from the early 1600s to the 1970s. And at Christmas, the experience is made all the more magical. Walk through period homes and learn how Danes celebrated Christmas in times gone by.

Live music
Aarhus has a thriving music scene with international and local artists performing nightly. Experience an eclectic mix of genres in candlelit cafes to cavernous concert halls. For festive classics, like The Nutcracker, and much more besides, visit Musikhuset (The Music House). The city’s sonic epicentre is the largest concert hall in Scandinavia and plays host to an annual 1,200 events.
