Christmas around the world: Sydney

As the world’s most global furniture retailer, we enjoy the holidays in sixty-five countries, spanning six continents. Read on to hear how Ryan Stevens, BoConcept Store Manager and Interior Designer, celebrates the Season for Sharing in Sydney, Australia.

“Christmas falls in the heart of summer here, so we do things a little differently. For starters, it isn’t cookies and milk that our children leave for Santa on Christmas Eve. It’s beer and biscuits! Loved ones congregate at our home for traditional British dishes, like turkey, roasted vegetables, Christmas pudding. But everyone in Australia fires up the barbeque as well, throwing on fresh tiger prawns, honey glazed ham and seafood platters.”

“The hot temperatures make for a very relaxed and generally outdoor affair. We eat on our terraces, breaking for dips in the pool. And late-night sunsets make quiet roads perfect for impromptu street parties with family and neighbours. On the 26th, Boxing Day, everyone heads for the beach. Luckily, I live in Sydney, which has some of Australia’s best coastline – perfect for surfing, soccer and making sandmen; our snowmen.”

Things to do in Sydney

Carols by the Sea
This event is a Christmas staple. Held annually at Bondi beach, where the local community and tourists come together for a festive ‘singalong.’ The night starts with entertainment from young, local musicians and is followed by Christmas favourites and carol singing. Carols by the Sea is more than just a great evening of entertainment. All proceeds go to local charities.

Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Perhaps not our most Christmassy suggestion, this annual race is nevertheless a highlight of Sydney’s festive calendar. On Boxing Day, head down to Sydney Harbour and watch the rare site of over a hundred yachts as they start this 1,170 km race to Hobart, Tasmania. The Sydney Hobart celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2019 and is seen as one of the world’s most difficult yacht races.

Floating Cinema
Sydney’s Floating Cinema launched in 2018 and the sail-away success returns in 2019. The premise is simple: For two nights a month, from October to February, a ticket gets you a seat aboard an open-top boat equipped with a cinema screen. In December you can choose between the Christmas classics, Die Hard and Home Alone. Try not to be distracted by the stunning twilight backdrop of Sydney Harbour.

Coogee Pavilion
Ryan recommends this family-friendly restaurant and bar. Its mouth-watering ‘made for sharing’ Mediterranean menu includes lobster rolls, fresh oysters and wood-fired pizzas. The Pav, as the locals call it, boasts jaw-dropping ocean views from its wrap-around balcony, restaurant and indoor and outdoor bars. And if you are planning to visit without children, try the adults-only Pavilion Rooftop.
