Hans Thyge & Co

Since 1990, Paris Lamp designer Hans Thyge Raunkjær has been creating design that engages the senses and tells compelling stories. Hans Thyge & Co Design Studio is a small of team creators, driven by curiosity and a passion for collaboration. They believe design is an exploration of registration and imagination, shaped by the past, present and future. Hans Thyge & Co has been the recipient of many prestigious design awards including the Red Dot Awards and the Scandinavian Business Award for Best Contemporary Interiors & Furniture Design Studio.

“Lamps create character in rooms and light has a very emotional value on people. Darkness is just as important as the place you light up as it is the contrast that creates the atmosphere.”...

Hans Thyge Raunkjær

Emotional connection

For Raunkjær, design inspiration stems from emotional and subconscious connections, not calculated originality. The Citroën car - especially its distinctive steering wheel - played a symbolic, subliminal role in the Paris lamp’s form. “Most inspirations are not conscious... suddenly they grow up through your brain and you see where it comes from. We were actually playing with the principle of having a circular thing and one spoke and, of course, it came to us - where it came from!”

Black pendant lamp with rounded matte shade hangs above a console table with ceramic bowls, lit by soft natural light.

Creative rituals

Raunkjær’s creative setting is a small, close-knit studio in a tranquil location. “We have a little studio, four or five people, on the coast. I live in a village and built my own house.” A surprising part of his creative ritual? “I do half an hour of gymnastics every morning - the Five Tibetans”, he shared. “To have physical energy keeps your mind going in a good way.”
