In 2008, designer Henrik Pedersen was about to present a new design to one of his first furniture clients. The client had requested a timeless recliner chair. Yet Henrik, being Henrik, decided to show something radically different. An organic design that mixed evocative curves, sharp edges, and visual tension. A chair that was in his words, “...more about the flow of the pen than rules of geometry.”
The client was BoConcept. The chair was Imola.
There are only a handful of craftsmen in the world qualified to make the chair. That qualification takes approximately a year and is only given to highly skilled upholsterers – and for good reason. Stretching such taut upholstery over Imola’s sculptural form is physically demanding work, which requires years of experience and a meticulous eye for detail.
When asked how one designs an icon, designer Henrik Pedersen responds, “You don’t. In fact, setting out with that intention is the easiest way to ensure failure. I think all icons are simply the product of turning up and putting in your best work. And in time, with a little luck, the world recognises your effort in the final product.”
The original Imola chair is available in BoConcept’s full range of over a hundred luxury fabrics and leathers. Match the material with your choice of base and finish with an optional footstool.
