Christmas around the world

Christmas around the world: New York

As the world’s most global furniture retailer, we enjoy the holidays in sixty-five countries, spanning six continents. Read on to hear how Kalina Todorova, BoConcept’s Visual Merchandising Manager, celebrates the Season for Sharing in New York, USA.

“I always take film depictions with liberal pinches of salt. But Hollywood’s sugary Christmas-in-New-York aesthetic is completely accurate. I’m biased, but I think no city creates the festive atmosphere quite like us. My husband and I, and our son and daughter love art and culture. So, in the run up to the big day, we set aside a lot of time for local outings. It’s wonderful to see the city’s architecture reimagined with awe-inspiring lights. While public parks are transformed into Christmas themed markets and outdoor skating rinks.”

“I am Bulgarian, and my husband is of South American decent. So, in true “melting pot” style, our Christmas is a blend of traditions. Christmas Eve is Bulgarian. I prepare all-vegan dishes and traditional Bulgarian Christmas breads, ‘Koledna pitka’. One of the breads is stuffed with a foil-wrapped coin and the rest with handwritten wishes for good luck and health for the new year. On Christmas Day, we follow American tradition – opening gifts with family and eating a menu of classics like roast beef, roasted vegetables and mashed potatoes. And my mother-in-law bakes an incredible pecan pie."

Things to do in New York

Rockefeller Center
In NYC, the Rockefeller Center tree is to Christmas what Rudolph is to Santa. Its famous lighting ceremony takes place in late November and marks the official start of the Christmas season. Make the trip, and you will be one of an estimated 125 million that flock to see its 50,000 LEDs every year. Then ride the elevator to the Observation Deck and enjoy illuminated city views from seventy floors up.

The Wollman Rink
This picturesque location was featured in Home Alone 2 and sits in Central Park with a backdrop of the New York skyline. The rink packs all the icy exhilaration needed for an Instagram-worthy Christmas break. Queues are typically shorter than the Rockefeller Center rink and you can rent skates to boot (pun intended). Then why not take a horse carriage ride and visit the Central Park Zoo?

The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world. It’s also a Christmas destination for art loving New Yorkers and tourists alike. In December, its three iconic sites get a healthy injection of Christmas spirit, with special exhibitions, talks, carol performances and more.

Dinner cruise
Take a Christmas Eve dinner cruise and enjoy great food with jaw-dropping views of the New York skyline. Options abound for all tastes and budgets. Choose from luxury yachts, vintage vessels and glass-roofed boats. Take a leisurely brunch, or go upmarket with a luxury buffet, live band and a meet-and-greet with the man of the moment: Santa.
